SBYC encourages all sailors to participate in sailing competitively at an appropriate age and experience level. LBIYRA Interclubs and other Regattas teach new and different skills that Junior Sailors will not learn without the sailing experience of new waters and varying conditions.
SBYC Sailors have the opportunity to participate in many regattas throughout the summer. Participation is not just about sailing. It includes traveling to other clubs, meeting new friends, enjoying parties, prizes and lots of doughnuts. The benefits of competing in larger fleets, as well as experiencing different wind, water and current conditions is the best way to apply a sailors skills to improve their abilities. A schedule of the Regattas we plan to attend as SBYC Sailing team will be made available.
All boats will be loaded after Tuesday’s lesson. Interclub registration begins at 8:30 am at the hosting club. Juniors should plan to meet at SBYC at the posted time to leave with the carpool. There is a $5.00 charge per sailor for Interclubs. Lunch is included.
Transporting Boats to Regattas
SBYC strives to offer arrangements to transport all boats to Interclubs and regattas on the Club trailers. Our Sailing Instructors are unable to trailer you child’s boat to regattas or transport your child in their vehicle. As it is your responsibility as a parent to get his/her boat to regattas, please be prepared to take a turn to tow one of our boat trailers. The Coach will coordinate with the parents to make sure we have enough parents to trailer boats to each event. A schedule of regattas and a sign-up sheet will be in the Junior Clubhouse. We also need to make sure there are sufficient parents to drive the Sailors to and fro regattas.
Instructors attend these competitions to assist and coach our sailors in the race activities. They are there to encourage the Junior Sailors to help one another and teach them how to move and carry their boats. Please explain this to your child. Except in the case of young children, parents are discouraged from carrying the boats. This fosters teamwork, independence and self-sufficiency.
For parents who are transporting boats it would be helpful to the sailors if you would take care of their dry clothes.
