Our Junior Sailing Program is designed for children 7 thru 17 years of age. Through trained sailing instructors and on the water group lessons, our aim is to teach our Junior Sailors the basics of small sailboat handling, including care and rigging o boats, safety and for advanced sailors, racing techniques. Most of all the Junior Sailing Program is designed to be a safe and enjoyable experience for our youth. We will be using the US Sailing Curriculum and will work towards certifying each sailor in Small Boat Handling. The fleet at SBYC consists of Optimists, Sunfish, Lasers and 420’s.

Objectives
1. To promote safety on the water – this is our first and top priority.
2. To teach, develop and increase awareness and confidence in and around the water, as well as to develop and increase self-esteem.
3. To encourage excitement about sailing and to teach the skills and techniques of sailing.
4. To develop sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation and consideration.
5. To develop sailing skills through regattas and races.

Daily Attendance
Our Instructors will take attendance in the morning and afternoon. Please make sure your child understands that if they are leaving they are expected to inform their instructor. Parents are encouraged to pick-up and drop-off young sailors daily. Older sailors should make responsible arrival and departure plans with their parents and instructors. If a sailor expects to be away for an extended period of time, please inform your instructor.

Weekly Schedules/Schedule Changes
The weekly schedule of activities will be posted on the bulletin board on the south side of the Junior Clubhouse. Daily changes are noted on the chalkboard inside. Sign-up sheets for activities, trailers and Parent of the Day are inside as well.

Attire
The following is a list of suggested attire and equipment to sail. Please make sure all of your sailors’ possessions are marked with his/her name. A backpack or bag are suggested and should be properly stored.

* Swim suit and T-shirt * Water shoes * Life jacket with a whistle * Towel
* Sunscreen * Sunglasses * Water Bottle (frozen works well) * Baseball cap or hat
  * 20 foot tow line * Sponge & bailer for water
Please mark all clothing and equipment with your name.

Parent/Grandparent Involvement: Parent of the Day.
Our primary goal reflects our concern with the Junior Sailors safety. To further increase our Sailor’s safety and respond to parent concerns, the Parent of the Day Program is being continued. It is a simple concept that is a cornerstone in many Junior Sailing Programs.

Each parent who has a child enrolled in the Sailing Program will be asked to be the “on-duty” parent for two days (or four Half days) during the course of the summer. The role of this parent is to help with the routine daily responsibilities. The parent will be at the Junior Clubhouse and equipped with a ship-to-shore radio for communication with the Instructors. If a sailor has equipment problems, illness, or other reason the return to shore the Instructor will radio the Parent of the Day to expect this child and be prepared to help. Children not willing to sail will not be on the premises without an adult in charge.
